Madrid Marathon
I am running the Madrid Marathon in support of the Bungoma Project.
I have run half marathons in Nairobi, Kilimanjaro, Achill and Connemara, but this is my first full length marathon.
The Madrid Marathon follows an entirely urban route including the Puerta del Sol, Santiago Bernabéu stadium, Plaza Mayor, the Royal Palace and finishing in Retiro Park. Up to 13,000 runners from over 50 different countries participate each year, with over a million spectators attending. The race is known for it's challenging course, covering hills at altitude in heat, but also for the vocal support of the crowd.
This year's event, the 32nd annual, takes place on April 26, 2009.
Full time training began after New Year's, with three mid week runs of 5 miles or more and double that on Saturdays. It's hard work, but a great excuse to eat more spaghetti! With just a handful of days' training left to go, I'm hoping for a time of four hours and forty minutes.
